Liz Sly, a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, is based in Beijing.

Liz Sly is The Washington Post’s Beirut bureau chief, responsible for coverage of Syria, Lebanon and the wider Middle East. She joined The Post in as Baghdad bureau chief, then in moved to Beirut to focus on Syria and the region.

After the American occupation of Iraq in , Liz Sly took over the management of the Chicago Tribune newspaper office in Baghdad from to , and covered pivotal events in Iraq, including her coverage of the Iraqi Parliament elections on 15 December , and the civil war in Iraq.

To find out whether the threat of peasant unrest is serious, I took a trip to the province of Hunan, a place renowned for its hot weather, hot food, and hot.

Over the next five years I covered some of the biggest and most heartbreaking stories of my career, including the famine in Somalia that prompted the dispatch of U.S. Marines and the genocide in Rwanda. I also covered the most uplifting story of my career, the end of apartheid in South Africa and the election of Nelson Mandela.
